The guide
Antarctica is not a destination that can be planned like the others, and Famous Africa includes it because it belongs on the same list of journeys worth making rather than because it resembles them.
There is no infrastructure, no population and no scheduled way in. Almost every visitor arrives by expedition ship, and the season is short — roughly November to March, when the sea ice retreats enough to allow passage.
The Peninsula is where the great majority of visitors go, and where the wildlife and the landscape are most concentrated.
South Georgia holds the largest concentrations of wildlife anywhere on earth, and is a longer voyage than the Peninsula alone.
Flying into the interior from Cape Town reaches emperor penguins and the South Pole itself — the most expensive and most committing way to visit.
