Best time to travel

Nov – Jan

The season is the austral summer only: roughly November to January, with Emperor penguin chicks in November and December. Outside that window the continent is closed to visitors. An indicative pattern rather than a forecast; conditions vary year to year.

The guide

Antarctica in full

Antarctica is not a destination that can be planned like the others, and Famous Africa includes it because it belongs on the same list of journeys worth making rather than because it resembles them.

There is no infrastructure, no population and no scheduled way in. Almost every visitor arrives by expedition ship, and the season is short — roughly November to March, when the sea ice retreats enough to allow passage.

Gateways

  • USHUshuaia, ArgentinaThe main embarkation port for the Antarctic Peninsula, at the southern tip of South America.
  • PUQPunta Arenas, ChileThe departure point for fly-cruise itineraries that fly the Drake Passage rather than sail it.
  • CPTCape Town, South AfricaThe gateway for flights to the interior and to the Weddell Sea side, and the reason Antarctica sits on a Southern African operator's list at all.

Getting around

  • By ship, almost entirely — and the ship is the itinerary rather than the transport. Vessel size decides how much time is spent ashore, because landing regulations cap how many people may be on land at once.
  • Fly-cruise itineraries from Punta Arenas skip the Drake Passage in both directions and shorten the trip by about four days, at a higher cost and with weather-dependent flights.
  • Booking runs a long way ahead. Cabins on the better expedition ships are commonly taken a year or more in advance, and the season is only a few months long.
