The guide
Madagascar separated from Africa roughly 88 million years ago and evolved alone, which is why around ninety per cent of its wildlife exists nowhere else on earth. Lemurs, baobabs, chameleons — none of the mainland's large mammals, and almost nothing you have seen before.
It is not a safari destination and should not be sold as one. It is a natural-history destination, and the travel is harder than its neighbours: distances are long, roads are poor, and internal flights are essential and occasionally unreliable.
Andasibe is the closest rainforest to the capital and the reliable place to see and hear the indri, the largest living lemur.
The Avenue of the Baobabs near Morondava is the country's defining image, and the western dry forests hold species found nowhere else.
Isalo is sandstone canyon country, and the spiny forest beyond it is one of the most alien landscapes in the world.
Nosy Be in the north-west is the country's beach destination, and the smaller islands around it are the better part of it.
