Amboseli is elephant country beneath Kilimanjaro, and gives the single most recognisable view in East Africa.

The park is small and the game viewing is concentrated around its swamps, which makes it a two-night stop rather than a week. Its elephant families are among the most studied on the continent.
Tsavo East and Tsavo West, between Nairobi and the coast, are vast by comparison and far less visited — red-dust country that suits a traveller who has already done the classics.
How do you get to Amboseli?
By light aircraft from Nairobi's Wilson Airport, a flight of under an hour, or by road, which takes four to five hours. Amboseli lies against the Tanzanian border, and the road on to Tsavo West continues towards the coast.
Can you see Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?
Yes. The mountain stands across the border in Tanzania and rises to 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa, and Amboseli's flat plains give the classic view of it behind the elephants. Cloud often hides the summit through the middle of the day, so the clearest views tend to come early and late.
Why is Amboseli famous for elephants?
Its elephants have been studied continuously since 1972 by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, one of the longest-running studies of any wild animal. The families are used to vehicles, and the park is known for some of the largest-tusked bulls left in Africa. They gather around the swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's groundwater.
What is the difference between Amboseli and Tsavo?
Amboseli is small and concentrated, with the mountain behind it. Tsavo East and Tsavo West together form one of the largest protected areas in Africa, far emptier and less visited. Tsavo's elephants are often red from the dust they spray over themselves, and Tsavo West has Mzima Springs, where hippos can be watched underwater from an observation tank.
How long should you spend in Amboseli?
Two nights is usual. It pairs well with Laikipia and the Mara, and Tsavo makes a natural route between Amboseli and the coast.
