Akagera is Rwanda's savannah park in the east, restocked with lion and rhino and now a genuine Big Five destination.

Its recovery is one of the more remarkable conservation stories in the region: lions were reintroduced in 2015 and black rhino in 2017, in a park that had been almost emptied.
It gives a Rwandan itinerary a game-drive component without leaving the country, and the lake system along the Tanzanian border makes for good boating and birding.
