Passport validity and blank pages
Most countries in the region expect a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date you leave, and several require two or more completely blank facing pages for entry and exit stamps. Both are checked at the airline desk before you fly, not on arrival — which is why a passport that is technically valid can still stop a trip.
If your passport is within a year of expiry when you book, renewing it before you travel is usually simpler than establishing whether it will pass.
Yellow fever certificates
Yellow fever certification is the requirement most often missed, because it depends on where you have been rather than where you are from. Several countries in East and Southern Africa require proof of vaccination from travellers arriving from, or transiting through, a country where yellow fever is a risk.
That catches multi-country itineraries in particular. If your routing passes through another African country on the way, check the requirement for the country you are entering next rather than only your first destination.
Travelling with children
Some countries in the region ask for additional documentation for travellers under 18 — commonly an unabridged birth certificate showing both parents, and consent from any parent not travelling. Requirements differ by country and have changed more than once.
This is worth confirming early rather than late, because the documents can take weeks to obtain and cannot be produced at the airport.
Onward travel and proof of funds
Entry conditions frequently include an onward or return ticket and, occasionally, evidence of accommodation or funds. These are rarely examined but are formally part of the conditions of entry, and a traveller on a one-way ticket should expect to be asked.
