The guide

South Africa in full

South Africa is the most logistically varied country in the region, and the reason most itineraries there combine three or four quite different places rather than settling in one. A single trip can hold a Big Five reserve, a coastal city, a wine region and a stretch of shoreline, and the internal flight network makes that practical in a fortnight.

It is also the country where a first-time visitor to Africa is most likely to start. The road network is good, the tourism infrastructure is mature, English is widely spoken, and the malaria-free reserves in the north make it workable for families who would rather not take prophylaxis.

Greater Kruger and the Lowveld

The Greater Kruger is South Africa's principal safari region: the national park itself plus a belt of private reserves sharing unfenced boundaries with it.

  • Kruger National Park
  • Sabi Sand Game Reserve
  • Timbavati Private Nature Reserve
  • Manyeleti Game Reserve
  • Blyde River Canyon and the Panorama Route

The Garden Route

The Garden Route runs roughly from Mossel Bay to Storms River along the southern coast, and is the country's classic self-drive stretch.

  • Knysna
  • Plettenberg Bay
  • Tsitsikamma National Park
  • Wilderness
  • Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves

The Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape's private reserves are malaria-free and sit within reach of the Garden Route, which is why they so often close a family itinerary.

  • Addo Elephant National Park
  • Shamwari Private Game Reserve
  • Kwandwe Private Game Reserve
  • Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha)

Gateways

  • JNBJohannesburg — O. R. Tambo InternationalThe main long-haul gateway for the region and the connection point for most safari flights north and east.
  • CPTCape Town InternationalServed directly from Europe and the Gulf; usually the start or the end of a trip rather than the middle.
  • DURDurban — King Shaka InternationalThe gateway to KwaZulu-Natal, the Drakensberg and the Zululand reserves.

Getting around

  • Internal flights do the long legs. Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and the Eastern Cape are all connected by frequent scheduled services, and the safari regions are reached by light aircraft or a short road transfer from a regional airport.
  • The Garden Route and the Winelands are driven. Roads are good, signage is clear, and driving is on the left — which is the usual adjustment for visitors from Europe and North America.
  • Distances are larger than a map suggests. Kruger to Cape Town is a two-hour flight, not a drive, and itineraries that try to make it one lose days to the road.
